Your Instructor: Carolyn Simon, President of East Side Art Center
Ms. Simon, whose professional name is C.C. Wolf, has been coming to Block Island for over forty years, first with her husband, Don, and later joined by their daughter, Eryn. She has learned the island inside-and-out and much of her own work is based on Block Island subjects.
Carolyn studied at the Art Students' League and Hunter College (NYC) before receiving her BFA from Rhode Island School of Design as a painting major. She has taught for over thirty-five years, including classes in Florence, Italy, where she lived for three years, and also in several Rhode Island school districts. Since 1992, she has been the president and primary teacher at Providence's East Side Art Center and has directed its workshops on Block Island and in Florence, Italy.
A practicing, professional artist, her paintings and prints are exhibited internationally in museums and galleries and hundreds of private and corporate collections throughout New England. She is one of the founders of 19 on Paper, a Rhode Island based group of artists who have exhibited all over the world. Carolyn is a member of the Copley Society of Art. Instruction: The workshop is five days, Tuesday through Saturday, from 1:00 - 5:00 pm. The instructor is on-site during all the sessions, as well as at group critiques given on two separate days. This is an all media class and students at all levels beyond beginners are welcome. Bring media you are familiar with and can carry outdoors.
What gear you will need: We will be working at different sites throughout the island, so outdoor equipment will be necessary. Rain will not stop us, as we will work inside on any and all available surfaces.
Food: There is a grocery store, but we recommend that you bring some food from the mainland where it is less costly. And, of course, there are a variety of restaurants (from take-out, to moderate, to elegant) if you choose.
