Welcome to Block Island...
Welcome to our Workshop!
From the time your ferry enters Old Harbor -
twelve miles off mainland Rhode Island - you will begin to
appreciate why the Nature Conservancy calls Block Island one of
"The Twelve Last Great Places of the Western Hemisphere".
Miles of spacious beaches, rolling green pastures framed by
carefully placed stone walls, a landscape filled with wild flowers
and hundreds of water ponds make this possibly the most beautiful
of New England's islands. The Audubon Society considers its mere
eleven square mile area to be one of the most important bird
sanctuaries in the United States.
Within this beautiful landscape are some fine
examples of New England Victorian architecture. Houses, mostly old
- some new, clad in weathered shingles with ornamental details, are
beautifully situated within their natural surroundings. The small
downtown area, just across from the dock, also demonstrates how the
old and new can blend into a timeless environment. It recalls the
island's "heyday" in the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth
Century when thousands would arrive each week to escape the summer
heat of large cities. Yet, there is very much the presence of
Today, with casual and more formal restaurants, stores, coffee
houses, grocery and liquor stores, a library, movie theater,
bicycle rentals, etc.

A Time to Relax...
A Time to Learn and Enjoy.
September is an ideal time to visit Block
Island. For those of us who have returned year-after-year, it is a
time that we look forward to as summer winds down and before our
lives become more hectic with fall's activities. The island is now
more peaceful. The warmth of the late summer sun invites us to
sites that were less accessible before the summer crowds have left.
There are intriguing spaces to be drawn, to be painted and to
explore on foot, bicycle or car. |
